Grey Kangaroo (aka “The Spirit of Yonga”)

“Yonga” translates to Kangaroo in Nyoongar the language of the Aboriginal people of the south-west boodjara (country) of Western Australia.  This piece was inspired by a beautiful woman named Joelie Russell who raised an orphaned Western Grey Kangaroo on boodjara and who lives between there and Christmas Island using art making as an activator for education and environmental change.
